The Best Countertop Ice Makers in 2026: What 280 Critical Reviews Reveal About Failures
Last updated: October 13, 2026
The Frigidaire EFIC189 is the only countertop ice maker we recommend, for fast bullet ice with a published lab test behind it. For nugget ice, none of the machines we analyzed clears our bar. Every model had failure reports.
Verdict in 10 seconds
- Buy it if you want fast bullet ice from a machine with an independent lab test and the largest set of critical reviews we read (Frigidaire EFIC189).
- Skip it if you expect an ice maker to last for years without issues, or you want nugget ice: no nugget machine we analyzed earns our recommendation.

The best countertop ice maker we can recommend is the Frigidaire EFIC189, and only just: it makes bullet ice fast, an independent lab tested it, and we read more critical reviews for it (80) than for any other model. For nugget ice, none of the machines we analyzed clears our bar. No ice maker in this guide scores above 6.0 out of 10, because the same problem shows up for every one of them: machines that simply stop making ice.
Testers measure how much ice a new machine makes in an hour. That’s useful, but it can’t tell you what happens after six months on your counter. So we read the most recent critical Amazon reviews (one to three stars) for six popular models: 40 each, and 80 for the Frigidaire across two listings. Depending on the model, from 10 of 40 to 27 of 80 describe a machine that stopped working or arrived dead. Critical reviews show what goes wrong, not how often it happens, but the pattern held for all six.
How we got here: we read 280 recent critical Amazon reviews and a sample of low-star Walmart reviews for two models, used Amazon’s own counts of what reviewers mention, and compared published test results from America’s Test Kitchen, Reviewed and HealthyKitchen101. We did not test these ice makers ourselves. Full method below.

How long do countertop ice makers last? What buyers report
When unhappy buyers say how long their machine lasted, the answers run from a few days to about three years, and many stopped in the first year. Frigidaire owners describe units that quit after three months, after eight months when “the compressor went out,” and after 18 months. Silonn SLIM17B (nugget) owners describe a motor that gave out at six months and a unit that broke at seven. GE Opal 2.0 Ultra owners describe motors that started screeching within days or weeks. That describes what goes wrong for unhappy buyers. It isn’t a typical lifespan, which critical reviews can’t give you.
The closest thing to an expert estimate comes from Reviewed, which tests ice makers for USA Today: it says machines from GE or Frigidaire “can last 3 to 5 years or more with proper care,” and cheaper ones “perhaps on the order of one to three years.” That’s an editor’s estimate, not a measurement.
Three other complaints come up again and again:
- Sensor errors. Machines that flash “add water” with a full tank, or “ice full” with an empty basket. HealthyKitchen101, which tested several of these machines, found the “add water” alert was the more common of the two and often fixable with a cleaning cycle or a vinegar rinse.
- Noise. Fans and compressors are normal; grinding and screeching are not. Screeching motors are among the top complaints about the GE Opal 2.0 Ultra on Amazon (12 of 40 critical reviews, tied with cleaning and mold complaints) and the most common theme in the low-star Walmart reviews we read.
- Ice that melts in the basket. This one isn’t a defect. “Most portable ice makers do not keep ice frozen in the unit,” Reviewed explains; the basket is insulated but not refrigerated, and melted ice drains back into the tank to be refrozen. Move the ice to your freezer if you want to keep it.
How we picked (our criteria were set before we looked at the data)
- Countertop machines with no water line, sold on Amazon in the U.S. Built-in and plumbed units are out.
- Enough evidence: at least 40 critical reviews we could read, or Amazon’s topic counts plus an independent test.
- No active safety recall in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) database.
- Bullet and nugget compared separately, because they make different ice at different prices.
- Scored the same way as all our reviews: 30% build, 40% performance, 30% value. We recommend only models that score 6.0 or more: below that, the failures in the critical reviews aren’t offset by independently tested performance, or the price isn’t backed by the build. How each part is scored is explained at the end.
The best countertop ice makers at a glance
| Model | Ice type | Best for | FindorLabs Score | Critical reviews describing a failure | Biggest buyer complaint |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frigidaire EFIC189 | Bullet | Bullet ice (our only pick) | 6.0 | 27 of 80 | Units that stop making ice within months |
| Euhomy 26 lb | Bullet | Not recommended (why) | 5.9 | 10 of 40 | Weak ice production, failures |
| Silonn SLIM01 | Bullet | Not recommended (why) | 5.7 | 10 of 40 | Small, slow ice; failures |
| Silonn SLIM17B | Nugget | Not recommended (nugget ice) | 5.7 | 12 of 40 | Units that fail or start screaming |
| GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra | Nugget | Not recommended (why) | 5.2 | 11 of 40 | Screeching motors, heavy maintenance |
| Igloo IGLICEB26SS | Bullet | Not recommended (why) | 5.1 | 15 of 40 | Failures and “add water” errors |
Failure counts are out of the most recent critical Amazon reviews we read (October 2026), so they show what goes wrong, not how often. Scores use our fixed rubric.

Frigidaire EFIC189: the best bullet ice maker
FindorLabs Score 6.0/10Build 4.5 · Performance 7.0 · Value 6.0
It’s the model we read the most critical reviews for (80), and one of the few tested by an independent lab. America’s Test Kitchen measured about 1 pound of ice per hour and praised its “relatively large ice and speedy production cycles,” along with its small footprint and simple controls. Buyers agree on the ice: on Amazon, 477 of 545 mentions of ice production speed are positive.
| What the data shows | Result |
|---|---|
| Amazon rating | 4.3/5 (11,230 ratings) |
| Amazon performance mentions positive | 914 of 1,149 |
| Amazon ice production speed mentions positive | 477 of 545 |
| Amazon durability mentions negative | 395 of 506 |
| Critical reviews describing a failure | 27 of 80 |
| ATK ice per hour | about 1 lb |
The catch is how long it lasts. Durability is the most negative topic on its Amazon page, and the critical reviews explain why: units that stop making ice after a few months, a compressor that died at eight months, an “add water” error that won’t clear. Several owners also complain about support once the machine fails. It also has no self-cleaning cycle, which ATK found made cleaning “tedious,” and some owners say it’s hard to clean at all.
Buy it if you want fast bullet ice and a model with a published lab test behind it. Skip it if you want a self-cleaning machine, or if a failure in the first year would really bother you.

If you want nugget ice: no model clears our bar
The machines that testers praise for nugget ice, the GE Profile Opal 2.0 and 2.0 XL: we didn’t find either sold new on Amazon, and the two nugget machines we could analyze both land below our 6.0 line.
Silonn SLIM17B: the least bad of the two

FindorLabs Score 5.7/10Build 5.0 · Performance 6.0 · Value 6.0
It’s the most rated ice maker we looked at, with 34,158 Amazon ratings at 4.3 out of 5. Silonn rates it at 33 pounds of ice a day on its own site, while the Amazon listing title says 36, and its Amazon listing says it has a self-cleaning function.
| What the data shows | Result |
|---|---|
| Amazon rating | 4.3/5 (34,158 ratings) |
| Critical reviews describing a failure | 12 of 40 |
| Critical reviews about noise | 10 of 40 |
| Critical reviews about slow production or melting | 7 of 40 |
| Independent test | none found |
The failures we read include machines that quit at six, seven or 11 months, one with a motor that “went out at 6 months,” and one that “screams when trying to make ice.” One owner says Silonn replaced their first unit, and the second one developed the same noise four months later. We found no independent test of this model, and Amazon doesn’t show topic counts for this listing, so its scores rest on the critical reviews and its overall rating. We also couldn’t document a price advantage over other nugget machines, so we score its value as fair, not strong.
Four we’d skip, and why
| Model | Score | Main problem in the reviews we read |
|---|---|---|
| Euhomy 26 lb | 5.9 | 81 of 119 Amazon durability mentions and 75 of 99 ice production mentions are negative; 10 of 40 critical reviews describe a failure, often after three to five months |
| Silonn SLIM01 | 5.7 | ATK found its total output small and its cubes smaller and quicker to melt; 10 of 40 critical reviews describe a failure, including one owner whose replacement “lasted me less than a month” |
| GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra | 5.2 | 30 of its 40 most recent critical Amazon reviews are one star; 16 of 22 Amazon noise mentions and 10 of 15 maintenance mentions are negative |
| Igloo IGLICEB26SS | 5.1 | 15 of 40 critical reviews describe a failure, and 7 describe sensor errors such as “add water” with a full tank |
Euhomy 26 lb
It’s a best seller that its Amazon listing calls self-cleaning, and buyers like how fast it makes each batch (170 of 202 ice production speed mentions positive). But Amazon’s own counts show more negative than positive mentions of how much ice it makes overall and how long it lasts. We found no independent test of this exact model. It lands just under our 6.0 line.
Silonn SLIM01
It’s light and simple, and its self-cleaning cycle worked in ATK’s test, though it took 30 minutes. ATK rated it “Recommended with Reservations” because of its small output, and buyers’ most common complaint is slow, small ice.
GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra
The Opal line has the best reputation among testers: ATK named the Opal 2.0 its best nugget ice maker, and Reviewed named the 2.0 XL its best overall. But those tests were of the older models, and the Ultra is the version Amazon sells now. Its buyers describe motors that screech within days or weeks, units that died after 45 days or a few months, and frequent cleaning.
Two Amazon reviewers say the 30-day return window had closed by the time the problem started. Most of the 18 low-star Walmart reviews we read are copied from GE’s own site, and they describe the same screeching, often on replacement units. ATK called the older Opal 2.0 expensive; on this evidence, the Ultra isn’t worth the risk.
Igloo IGLICEB26SS
ATK’s “Best for Most People” is an Igloo, but a different model: the IGLICEB26HN, which is currently unavailable on Amazon. The stainless model Amazon sells has a 3.8-star rating and the highest share of failures in the critical reviews we read.
Testers’ picks we couldn’t score
These come up in independent tests, but we couldn’t apply our method to them:
- Igloo IGLICEB26HN: ATK’s “Best for Most People,” the only compact machine in its test with an efficient self-cleaning cycle. Currently unavailable on Amazon.
- GE Profile Opal 2.0 and 2.0 XL: ATK’s best nugget ice maker and Reviewed’s best overall. We found only a refurbished Opal 2.0 on Amazon (3.2 out of 5).
- Newair AI-215SS: the fastest machine in ATK’s test, at nearly 2 pounds of ice per hour. Its Amazon listing has too few reviews for us to score.
- Frigidaire EFIC255: Reviewed’s best-value nugget ice maker. We found no Amazon listing.
Bullet or nugget: which countertop ice maker should you buy?
- Bullet ice machines are the compact, budget option: hollow, bullet-shaped cubes in small or large sizes, about 26 pounds of ice a day, according to Reviewed. Reviewed notes the ice “may be a bit cloudy and melt faster” than ice from pricier machines, but it’s fine for sodas, water and filling a cooler.
- Nugget ice machines make soft, chewable pellets. They cost more, are often bigger and heavier (ATK weighed the Opal 2.0 at 38 pounds without its tank), and need more frequent cleaning: Reviewed recommends every one to two weeks for heavy daily use or nugget machines.
If you just want ice for drinks, a bullet machine like the Frigidaire is enough. Buy nugget only if you specifically love that kind of ice, and know that none of the nugget machines we could analyze earns our recommendation.
Before you buy any countertop ice maker
- Plan on cleaning. Reviewed recommends cleaning at least once a month with regular use. A self-cleaning cycle makes that much easier; in the reviews we read, machines that are hard to clean draw complaints about mold and buildup.
- Keep your receipt and register the warranty. Failures in the first year are common in the critical reviews, and several buyers found out the 30-day Amazon return window had closed just before their machine broke.
- Empty the basket into the freezer. The basket doesn’t keep ice frozen, so ice left in it melts and clumps.
- If you see “add water” or “ice full” errors, try the cleaning cycle and wipe the sensors before assuming the machine is broken, as HealthyKitchen101 suggests.
- Recalls: when we searched the CPSC database on October 13, 2026, we found no recall for any of the six models in this guide. One countertop nugget ice maker, sold by Gevi, was recalled in 2023 for a laceration hazard, so it’s worth a quick check before you buy.
Bottom line: if you want a countertop ice maker, the Frigidaire EFIC189 is the one we’d buy. Register the warranty, keep the receipt, and clean it at least monthly (more often for a nugget machine).

Frequently asked questions
Who makes the most reliable countertop ice maker?
None of the six models we analyzed has a clean record: from 10 of 40 to 27 of 80 of their most recent critical reviews describe a machine that stopped working. The Frigidaire EFIC189 has an independent lab test and the largest set of critical reviews we read behind it, which is why it’s our pick. Reviewed’s editors estimate GE and Frigidaire machines can last 3 to 5 years with proper care.
Is a portable ice maker worth it?
Yes, if you regularly run out of ice, host often, or don’t have an ice maker in your freezer. It’s less worth it if you need ice only occasionally, because these machines need monthly cleaning and failures within a few years are common in the critical reviews we read.
How long do countertop ice makers last?
There’s no measured average. Reviewed estimates one to three years for cheaper machines and 3 to 5 years or more for GE and Frigidaire with proper care. In the critical reviews we read, failures range from a few days to about three years.
Do countertop ice makers keep ice frozen?
No. The basket is insulated but not refrigerated, so the ice slowly melts back into the water tank, where the machine refreezes it. Move ice to your freezer if you want to store it.
Why does my ice maker say “add water” when the tank is full?
HealthyKitchen101 found this was the more common sensor error in its testing, often caused by an air blockage or dirt. Running the self-cleaning cycle, draining a little water or cleaning with white vinegar and water often fixes it. If it doesn’t, contact the maker while the machine is under warranty.
What’s the difference between bullet and nugget ice makers?
Bullet machines are smaller and cheaper and make hollow, cylinder-shaped cubes. Nugget machines make soft, chewable pellets, cost more and need more frequent cleaning.
How we analyzed this
This is a research-based guide, not a test of our own. Here is exactly what we did, between October 12 and October 13, 2026:
- Wrote our selection criteria first (countertop, no water line, enough evidence, no recall, same scoring rubric), then collected the data.
- Used Amazon’s own counts of review topics (not Amazon’s AI-generated summaries) where Amazon shows them.
- Read critical reviews: the most recent one- to three-star Amazon reviews for each model, collected with a data tool, then read and sorted one by one, plus a sample of low-star Walmart reviews for two models (18 for the GE, 5 for the Euhomy):
| Model | Amazon ratings | Critical Amazon reviews read | Walmart reviews | Independent test |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frigidaire EFIC189 | 11,230 | 80 (two listings) | not found | ATK, HealthyKitchen101 |
| Silonn SLIM17B (nugget) | 34,158 | 40 | not found | none found |
| Euhomy 26 lb | 2,536 | 40 | 106 (5 low-star read; listing match not confirmed) | none of this model |
| Silonn SLIM01 | 16,414 | 40 | not found | ATK, HealthyKitchen101 |
| GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra | 168 | 40 | 158 (18 low-star read) | none of this model |
| Igloo IGLICEB26SS | 952 | 40 | not checked | none of this model |
- Compared independent tests: America’s Test Kitchen (June 30, 2025; ice per hour, time to first batch, cleaning) and Reviewed (updated June 3, 2026), plus HealthyKitchen101 (2024; its own tests, used here mainly for troubleshooting advice).
- Searched the CPSC recall database for countertop ice makers and each brand (October 13, 2026).
How the sub-scores work: each is an editorial judgment on a 10-point scale, in half-point steps, anchored on the same inputs for every model. Build starts from the failures described in the critical reviews and Amazon’s durability and reliability mentions. Performance combines independent test results, where they exist for the exact model, with buyers’ performance mentions. Value weighs value-for-money mentions against the price tier. Totals are rounded half up to one decimal.
Evidence level: High for the Frigidaire EFIC189 and Silonn SLIM01 (an independent test of the exact model plus buyer reviews), Medium for the other four (no independent test of the exact model). It measures the evidence behind the scores, not the products’ quality. How we rate evidence.
| Model | Build (×30%) | Performance (×40%) | Value (×30%) | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frigidaire EFIC189 | 4.5 | 7.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 |
| Euhomy 26 lb | 5.0 | 6.0 | 6.5 | 5.9 |
| Silonn SLIM01 | 5.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 5.7 |
| Silonn SLIM17B (nugget) | 5.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 5.7 |
| GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra | 4.0 | 6.5 | 4.5 | 5.2 |
| Igloo IGLICEB26SS | 4.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 | 5.1 |
