The Best Small Air Fryers in 2026: Why a Compact 4-Quart Beats a 2-Quart Mini
Last updated: October 13, 2026
The Ninja AF101 is our best small air fryer, the Ninja Crispi the pick if you want glass, and the bella Slim the narrowest budget option. We would skip the popular 2-quart minis: each has a recurring defect.
Verdict in 10 seconds
- Buy it if you cook for one or two and want a compact 4-quart with a lab-tested record (Ninja AF101), glass instead of a coated basket (Ninja Crispi), or the narrowest footprint (bella Slim).
- Skip it if you are tempted by a 2-quart mini: the Chefman, COSORI Lite and Dash each have a recurring defect in buyer reviews.

The quick version: the best small air fryer for most people is the Ninja AF101, a compact 4-quart model with a lab-tested record. If you’d rather cook in glass than in a coated basket, get the Ninja Crispi; for the slimmest footprint on a budget, the bella Slim. We’d skip the popular 2-quart minis: each one we looked at has a recurring defect.
“Small” should mean small on your counter, not a tiny basket. The independent lab RTINGS warns that “very small air fryers struggle to properly cook even small portions” and recommends a larger model “even if you usually cook only for one.” The buyer data we read points the same way: the three most-rated 2-quart minis we found on Amazon all score 5.1 or lower in our ranking, each with one defect that keeps coming up. Critical reviews show what goes wrong, not how often, but the pattern is consistent.
How we got here: we used Amazon’s own counts of what reviewers mention on seven listings, read about 500 critical Amazon reviews (one to three stars) for the five models we hadn’t covered before, read 68 low-star Target reviews of the Ninja AF101, and compared RTINGS lab results. We did not test these air fryers ourselves. Full method below.

Why we don’t recommend a 2-quart mini
RTINGS, which says it has tested more than 50 air fryers, puts it plainly in its best small air fryers guide (updated August 21, 2026): very small models “struggle to properly cook even small portions.” In its 4-quart guide, it adds that surface area matters more than advertised capacity, and that about 50 square inches is “a good starting point.”
The buyer reviews add a second reason: durability. On Amazon, most durability mentions are negative for all three 2-quart minis we looked at:
| 2-quart mini | Durability mentions on Amazon | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| CHEFMAN 2 Qt | 235 | 205 |
| COSORI Lite 2.1 qt | 162 | 119 |
| Dash Tasti-Crisp 2.6 qt | 153 | 131 |
Details are in our 2-quart section.
How we picked (our definition was set before we looked at the data)
- Small means one basket rated 4.5 quarts or less by the manufacturer, for one or two people. Countertop ovens and dual-basket models are out.
- Enough evidence: sold on Amazon in the U.S., Amazon’s topic counts, at least 500 ratings or a lab test, and critical reviews we could read.
- Scored the same way as all our reviews: 30% build, 40% performance, 30% value. How each part is scored is explained at the end.

Ninja AF101: the best small air fryer for most people

FindorLabs Score 6.8/10Build 5.5 · Performance 7.5 · Value 7.0
This is the small air fryer with the strongest evidence behind it. RTINGS names it the best 4-quart air fryer “for most people.” Its testers found it “very versatile” and fast, but also that “quite a big proportion” of foods like wings or vegetables came out under- or overcooked, because of its small cooking surface. It has four modes and no shake reminder (RTINGS).
| What the data shows | Result |
|---|---|
| RTINGS air frying / cooking speed (out of 10) | 7.7 / 8.3 (4.2 qt measured) |
| Amazon rating | 4.7/5 (59,463 ratings) |
| Performance mentions positive | 4,795 of 5,044 |
| Ease-of-cleaning mentions positive | 1,767 of 1,852 |
| 1★ reviews: unit stopped working | 17 of 40 |
| 1★ reviews: smoke, melting or fire (individual reports) | 9 of 40 |
| Target 1–2★ reviews: unit died (mostly 2019–2022) | ~35 of 68 |
| 3★ reviews: noisy / bulkier than expected / no auto-pause | 8 / 6 / 3 of 40 |
What stood out to us is when these units fail: from a few weeks to about two years in, and on Target often around 12 to 14 months, just past the one-year warranty. One owner says Ninja doesn’t sell the replacement heating element. We can’t verify the smoke and fire reports, and we found no CPSC recall for this model.
Ninja’s listing describes a “ceramic-coated nonstick basket and crisper plate”; two buyers we read question that claim.
Get it if you want the best-tested compact air fryer for one or two people. Look elsewhere if you want a quiet fryer, or one that pauses when you open it.

Ninja Crispi: the best small glass air fryer

FindorLabs Score 6.4/10Build 5.5 · Performance 7.0 · Value 6.5
If you’d rather not cook in a coated basket, the Crispi’s food sits in a 4-quart glass container (it also comes with a 6-cup one), under a heating unit that lifts off so you can serve and store in the same dish. Only its crisper plate is coated, with a nano-ceramic nonstick (SharkNinja). It has four preset modes and no manual temperature setting (Prudent Reviews lists the presets between 375°F and 450°F).

The glass is not what fails; the heating unit is. More in our full Ninja Crispi review and our best glass air fryers ranking.
A good fit if you want food in glass and a cook-and-store dish. Not for you if you want to set exact temperatures.

bella Slim: the slimmest budget pick

FindorLabs Score 6.0/10Build 4.5 · Performance 6.0 · Value 7.5
The bella Fits-anywhere Slim is a 4-quart model designed to take little counter space, and bella describes its ceramic coating as made without PFAS or PTFE. It has no lab test.
| What the data shows | Result |
|---|---|
| Amazon rating | 4.5/5 (3,786 ratings) |
| Ease-of-cleaning mentions positive | 197 of 200 |
| Cooking-performance mentions positive | 145 of 161 |
| Critical reviews: control panel hard to read on light colors | ~28 of ~63 |
| Critical reviews: unit broke | ~14 of ~63 |
| Critical reviews: cooks slowly | ~12 of ~63 |
Pick your color carefully: buyers say the Oatmilk version has dark lettering. More in our non-toxic air fryer guide.
Choose it if counter space is tight and you want a coating sold as PTFE-free; pass if you want lab-tested performance.

Instant Vortex Mini: only if you want more cooking modes
FindorLabs Score 5.9/10Build 4.5 · Performance 6.5 · Value 6.5
The current 4-quart Vortex Mini has six functions and a viewing window. Note that its Amazon ratings mix the current windowed model with the older Vortex Plus Mini, and one buyer warns that many reviews aren’t for the version on sale. Amazon’s counts can’t separate the two, and only about 37 of the 90 critical reviews we read were for the current model, so treat this score as provisional. There’s no lab test, and the listing doesn’t say what the basket is coated with.
| What the data shows | Result |
|---|---|
| Amazon rating | 4.6/5 (14,176 ratings, two generations) |
| Performance mentions positive | 1,054 of 1,126 |
| Durability mentions negative | 143 of 232 |
| Critical reviews: unit failed | 24 of 90 |
| Critical reviews: beeping (11 say it can’t be turned off) | 15 of 90 |
| Critical reviews: plastic smell (mostly newer model) | 10 of 90 |
| Critical reviews: poor support | 5 of 90 |
| Switched itself on / cracked or leaking window | 2 / 2 |
The beeping complaint was the one we didn’t expect: buyers say it keeps going even while the basket is out for washing. One buyer says the plastic smell faded after about 20 uses. The self-start and window reports are individual, but worth knowing.
It makes sense if you want its six listed modes (air fry, broil, roast, dehydrate, bake, reheat) in a small body, and less so if you’re sensitive to beeping or want a proven lifespan.

Before you buy a 2-quart mini
These are the three most-rated 2-quart minis we found on Amazon. We scored them, but we don’t recommend any of them: each has one defect that comes up again and again in critical reviews.
| 2-quart mini | Score | Critical reviews read | #1 recurring problem | Other complaints |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CHEFMAN 2 Qt Mini | 5.1 | 120 | Unit died (33), sometimes because the touch panel failed | Coating peeling or rusting (20), chemical smell or taste (19), too small (24) |
| COSORI Lite 2.1 qt | 5.1 | ~128 | Drawer latch breaks, warps or melts, so the fryer won’t start (~40) | Display loses segments (~23) |
| Dash Tasti-Crisp 2.6 qt | 4.9 | ~82 | Nonstick coating flakes off (~26) | Unit stopped working (19) |
What surprised us is that each mini fails in its own way. The COSORI Lite is the frustrating one: buyers like how it cooks (244 of 263 “cooks well” mentions are positive), but the drawer latch often gives out after one to two years, sometimes again on the replacement. On the Chefman, one buyer measured the basket at about 6 by 5.9 inches. Dash also sells a separate ceramic version, with few reviews so far.
Power may explain why slow cooking comes up in the Chefman and Dash reviews:
| Model | Capacity | Listed wattage |
|---|---|---|
| CHEFMAN 2 Qt | 2 qt | 900 W |
| COSORI Lite | 2.1 qt | 900 W |
| Dash Tasti-Crisp | 2.6 qt | 1,000 W |
| bella Slim | 4 qt | 1,300 W |
| Ninja Crispi | 4 qt | 1,500 W |
| Instant Vortex Mini | 4 qt | 1,500 W |
| Ninja AF101 | 4 qt | 1,550 W |
If you only ever cook for one and mostly reheat snacks, a 2-quart can do the job. Otherwise, we’d start with the 4-quart picks above: they have more cooking power and the lab’s backing, though they have weak points of their own, covered in each section.
One size up: the Ninja Pro AF141
If you can fit a slightly bigger fryer, RTINGS calls the 5-quart Ninja Pro AF141 the best 4-quart air fryer it has tested and says it cooks more evenly than the AF101. It’s above our 4.5-quart cutoff, so we didn’t score it.
| Model | RTINGS measured capacity | RTINGS air frying |
|---|---|---|
| Ninja Pro AF141 | 5.1 qt | 8.1 |
| Ninja AF101 (for comparison) | 4.2 qt | 7.7 |

How to choose a small air fryer
- Compare the basket, not the quarts. Capacity doesn’t tell you how much food fits in one layer; RTINGS suggests about 50 square inches of surface as a starting point.
- Check the footprint separately. Several AF101 owners call it bulky on the counter even though the basket is small.
- Keep your receipt past one year. Many failures in the reviews we read land just after the one-year warranty, for the AF101, the Chefman and the COSORI Lite.
- Hand-wash nonstick baskets. Coating complaints are common on cheap minis, and two buyers we read say the dishwasher left parts rusted or ruined.
- Unplug it when you’re done. Two Instant owners report their fryer switching on by itself.
- Recalls: when we checked the CPSC’s recall notices on September 30, 2026, we found no air fryer recall for Ninja’s AF101, Instant, Chefman or Dash. Cosori’s 2023 recall covered other Cosori models; the Lite (model CAF-LI211) isn’t on its list.
Bottom line: measure your counter first.
- 11 to 12 inches: the Ninja AF101, or the Ninja Crispi if you want glass.
- About 8 to 9 inches: the bella Slim (the narrowest 4-quart we found).

Frequently asked questions
What size air fryer is best for one person?
A compact 4-quart. RTINGS recommends a larger model “even if you usually cook only for one,” because very small fryers “struggle to properly cook even small portions.” The Ninja AF101 is our pick.
Is a 2-quart air fryer worth it?
Only for snacks and reheating for one person. The three most-rated 2-quart minis we looked at all score 5.1 or lower, and each has a recurring defect: a dying touch panel (Chefman), a breaking drawer latch (COSORI Lite), or flaking coating (Dash).
What is the smallest good air fryer?
Going by the dimensions listed on Amazon, the narrowest 4-quart here is the bella Slim (about 8.2 inches wide), though it has no lab test and the least independent evidence of our picks. The 2-quart minis are smaller still, but we don’t recommend them.
How long do small air fryers last?
Many buyers in the reviews we read report failures around one to two years, often just past the one-year warranty. Keep your receipt and register the product.
Which small air fryer avoids nonstick coatings?
The Ninja Crispi cooks in glass; only its crisper plate is coated. See our best non-toxic air fryers guide for more options.
How we analyzed this
This is a research-based guide, not a test of our own. Here is exactly what we did, on September 30 and October 1, 2026:
- Wrote our definition first: one basket rated 4.5 quarts or less, sold on Amazon in the U.S., with at least 500 ratings or a lab test. Then we collected the data.
- Used Amazon’s own counts of review topics (not Amazon’s AI-generated summaries) and read critical reviews (one to three stars) for each model:
| Model | Amazon ratings | Critical reviews we read | Lab test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ninja AF101 | 59,463 | 80 on Amazon + 68 one- and two-star on Target | RTINGS |
| Instant Vortex Mini 4 qt | 14,176 | 90 | — |
| CHEFMAN 2 Qt Mini | 29,953 | 120 | — |
| COSORI Lite 2.1 qt | 8,566 | ~128 | — |
| Dash Tasti-Crisp 2.6 qt | 8,211 | ~82 | — |
| bella Slim | 3,786 | ~63 (earlier review) | — |
| Ninja Crispi | more than 7,000 | 103 on Target (earlier review) | RTINGS |
- Target: the AF101’s 68 low-star reviews came from 631 written reviews. Target data for the other models was too thin or couldn’t be matched to the same model.
- Compared RTINGS lab results: its best small and best 4-quart air fryer guides (August 2026) and its AF101 review. RTINGS earns affiliate commissions.
- Recorded the dimensions and wattage listed on Amazon for all seven models (October 1, 2026).
- Searched CPSC recall notices for each brand.
- Couldn’t access Reddit, which blocks our research tools.
How the sub-scores work. Build reflects negative durability or reliability mentions on Amazon, the problems described in the critical reviews we read, and the warranty. Performance combines RTINGS lab scores, where they exist, with the share of positive performance and cooking mentions. Value combines value-for-money mentions with what you get for the price tier.
Evidence level: Medium. It rates how much independent evidence sits behind the scores. It’s strongest for the Ninja AF101 (a lab test and very large review pools) and weakest for the bella, the Instant and the Dash (no lab test; the Instant’s ratings mix two generations). It measures the evidence, not the products’ quality. How we rate evidence.
Scores use our fixed rubric. How we score.
